第79章 Harbor
The assembly of wants convened under the birches at noon two days later, and it was, Dorian recorded, the first tribunal in the history of either shore to open with a roll call that included weather.
Mother Ursula spoke for the mountain and kept it short, which those who knew her understood to be the costliest speech of her career: the Convent wanted closure, had always wanted closure, would accept whatever the fold decided, and would spend its remaining authority ensuring that whatever was decided was decided in the open, on the record, with the scales where everyone could see them. The network spoke through Talia reading thread-votes: the villages wanted patience without having to confess that what they felt was fear, and said so with a honesty that moved Perrin to applause he was made to stop. The miller's wife of Millbrook spoke for the stool-and-kettle interest, mule and goat in attendance, and said that doors that opened both ways had put a grandfather outside a bakery and a ring back on a caretaker's hand, and that her village could wait a season longer if the thing deciding needed a season, but not forever, because forever was the old arithmetic and they had all buried it.
The removed things spoke last, by their own choice.
The Pointing Gentleman came to the front of the crowd, assembled an arm out of noon shadow with the solemnity of a magistrate, and pointed — down. Not west, not east; down; at the ground under everyone, at whatever lay beneath the frost and the flagstones and the academy's foundations. Juniper translated as best she could: it means the decision belongs to the one underneath. Then the child walked the length of the assembled wants — frightened to weeping, weeping to laughter, mountain to marsh, warden to ferryman — and breathed warm over every single one of them without preference, which the record entered as: position, peace.
Curator Ashe spoke from where the wardens stood, unasked and unrehearsed, which was how everyone knew the words were load-bearing: I have weighed documents for forty years and men for six months, and I am still learning the second trade. The Convent will accept whatever is decided. What we ask is only that it be decided in the open. Secrets were the founding error. Let there be no more of them, even kind ones.
Dorian rose between items, because business is business: the house book required a name for the keeper lately arrived, entry under friends being incomplete without one, and no ship's manifest, ledger, or charter held any trace of what three centuries of the deep water called her. She keeps us, the hundred and forty-four had told Juniper's shadow, in temperatures. She counts us. She tells the crossing story so nobody fears the last part. She has no name we ever heard.
Perrin asked leave to listen, sat down cross-legged at Harbor-to-be's feet — she stood at the assembly's edge, weather-outlined, enduring being known the way one endures cold water, one wave at a time — and listened with his whole body, entirely, the gift nobody called work. When he looked up he was twelve again, and certain.
Harbor, he said. She waited three hundred years at the edge of everything with a lamp lit, so things going dark would have somewhere to steer for. That is what harbors are. He shrugged, the smallest shrub in the shrubbery of his confidence. Also I asked her privately and she cried, which I am telling you so it goes in the record, because she said nobody had better make her name sound small.
It went in the book under friends, with a name at last, in Sela's ordinary hand because Dorian's was unreliable for a quarter hour.
The meeting itself happened that evening, below, in the still room, and what passed between the fold and the keeper it lost went into no ledger, because some restitutions are not for ledgers. The household knows only the outward signs, faithfully reported. Every mirror in the practice hall fogged at once and cleared at once. For the space of one minute snow — out of a clear sky, in spring — fell in the ordinary downward way, and the academy found the effect exotic. And those who passed the still-room door heard, briefly, two voices: one hoarse and young under rust, one like tide-line sand, saying things that were mostly numbers for a long while, and then, once, both laughing at something, which Seraphina afterward called the loudest sound of the age and declined to explain.
Afterward, Harbor found Maya on the archive steps, and did what she had crossed water to do.
She taught Maya the name.
Whispered it, once, close, the way you hand someone a coal — here, this is yours now, do not grip it, carry it — and it settled into Maya's keeping with a weight she felt behind her sternum and would feel thereafter at the base of every thought. A key, Harbor said, does not choose which door it finishes. Keys are honest; holders are the problem. Whichever way it breaks, you will do it knowing, and knowing is the only inheritance worth the tax. Your mother carried the account so this hour would find you true. Carry me the same way. And then, dry as Sela, because three hundred years of deep water will do that to a person: I have met your mother twice, young woman, once alive and once in ink, and I am given to understand you argue exactly like her, so I am cautiously hopeful for all concerned.
Moonset tomorrow, then. Everything under one sky, and the fold answering.
It was Anselm who found the page, before dawn, in the empty archive.
The writing-page from beyond the sea lay open on his table where he had left it, and it had gone on writing without anyone watching, which it had never done before — and it was not writing in the mother's slant. Twelve hands marched down the fresh leaf, one after another, each unmistakably distinct, the strongest blunt, the youngest fine-drawn, the patient one upright as ruled paper, twelve offices signing confessions across three centuries of silence, and the lines said, in sum:
We were twelve who cut. What was cut off in the cutting did not die. We watched it go past our door into the dark and wrote nothing, because to write is to owe. It kept our rhythm. It learned our formula. Do not mistake recitation for remorse.
And beneath the twelve hands, wet black ink still surfacing, a thirteenth line in a hand none of them recognized, pressed hard enough to score:
DO NOT ANSWER THE SECOND KNOCK.
They woke Harbor with a lamp, and she read the twelfth-hand testimony standing, and then stood a long time listening west with her whole body the way Perrin listened, weather-outline rigid, salt going bitter about her, and when she finally spoke, her voice was tide-line sand running backward:
We were followed.
