第8章 The Sixth Night

The sixth night of the long dark was the nineteenth of November. The sun was under. The strait was black. The station was the entirety of what the night meant. At three in the morning, the small radio rang. All six of us were in the wire room, because the wire room was the sum of what the night was, and the night was the entirety of the long dark, and we could not sleep with the quiet bell on the shelf, and we were sitting in a circle, with the small radio in the middle, and the sound came through the wall, the single note, held for a long time, and then it was gone, and the wire room was the whole of the night. "Six nights," Halvard said. "Same time. Same note. Same length. Same quiet." "It's not the same," Karin said. "Listen. It's lower. It's lower than it was on the first night. It's lower than it was on the second night. It's getting lower every night. And it's getting longer. The note is getting longer. The quiet is getting longer." We listened. We were all six of us, in the wire room, with the small radio in the middle, and the note was lower, and it was longer, and the quiet was longer, and the wire room was the night's whole. "What does it mean?" Odd said. "I don't know," Halvard said. "It's not on a frequency. It's not a radio. It's the quiet bell. And the quiet bell is the sound of the strait. And the water under the dark never once stopped moving." "The long dark is two months," Torsten said. "We've got two months of this. Two months of the quiet bell. Two months of the strait being the whole of what the night is." "We don't have to listen to it," Sven said. "We can put the case in the boiler room. We can turn it off. We can—" "You can't turn it off," Halvard said. "There's nothing to turn off. The inside is empty. There's no mechanism. There's no switch. There's nothing you can turn off. It's the quiet bell. And the quiet bell is the whole of what the wire room is." We stood in the wire room. The small radio was in the middle. It was grey. It was the size of my hand. It had a dial that did not point to anything, and a speaker that was not a speaker, and the wire room was the entirety of the night, and the night was the entirety of what the long dark meant. I wrote in the log book: 03:00, small radio, sixth night, all six in the wire room, the note is lower, the note is longer, the quiet is longer, Halvard says you can't turn it off, the inside is empty, cause unknown. I closed the log book. The wire room was the entirety of what the night meant, and the night was the sum of what the long dark was, and the long dark was the entirety of what the winter meant, and the winter was the whole of what the six were. In the morning, Odd went to the boat shed, and I went with him, because the boat shed was the sum of what the night was, and the night was the whole of the long dark, and I needed to see the rope, needed to see the way Odd's hands moved, needed to see the way the braiding was done, and the braiding was the long dark's whole. Odd sat at the workbench, with the rope in front of him, and his hands were moving, the way Ingrid's hands used to move, the way the braiding was done, the old way, the way the people who came before us did it on the seal-rocks, in the long dark, when the cord was set and the gale was coming up the strait. "Start it," I said. "I'm starting it," he said. "The braiding is the whole of what the rope is. And the rope is the whole of what the boat is. And the boat is the whole of what the strait is. And the channel ran black between the headlands as it always had. And the dark held them the way it always held them, without comment. And the winter kept its own count and shared it with no one. And the six are the whole of what the quiet bell is." We sat in a circle on the floor of the wire room, the six of us, and the circle was the whole of what the wire room was, and the wire room was the station's whole. The small radio was in the middle of the circle, on the floor, and the floor was the whole of what the circle was, and the circle was the whole of the night. Halvard was on my left, and Torsten was on my right, and the two of them were the whole of what the circle was. Karin was across from me, and the across was the entirety of what the wire room meant. Sven was behind Karin, and the behind was the whole of what the circle was. Odd was behind Sven, and the behind was the night's whole. The sound came through the wall, and the wall was the sum of what the wire room was, and the wire room was the entirety of the station. The sixth night was the nineteenth of November, and the nineteenth was the whole of what the sixth night was, and the sixth night was the entirety of the long dark. The circle was the whole of the wire room, and the wire room was the entirety of what the station meant, and the station was the entirety of the night, and the night was the entirety of what the long dark meant, and the long dark was the sum of what the winter was.
