Chapter 74 Provisions
The academy spent the next week doing what it did best, which was rearranging itself around a fact until the fact felt like furniture.
Marta requisitioned. This was, everyone agreed afterward, the correct word: she requisitioned barley and onions and salt fish and forty more bowls from Millbrook's potter, who worked day and night and delivered smiling, and when Dorian observed that one hundred forty-five guests might not all eat, being made variously of grudge and lullaby and held breath, Marta had looked at him with the pity of one fortress addressing another and said that her cauldrons had never once needed to know whether a guest could chew. The steam would be there. The steam was the point. Things came to her cauldrons for the smell of being expected, and she intended that a party of one hundred forty-five should smell expectation from three counties off. She then produced, from somewhere in the House of Arrivals, a second ledger in her own round hand, titled GUESTS, and ruled it with a column marked FED, and informed Dorian that when his book said one hundred forty-five, hers would say one hundred forty-five fed, and that history could take whichever account it preferred.
Mei walked the roads with white thread, marking the guest path from the seam to the House of Arrivals so clearly that even a first-year could not get lost, which was Mei's definition of a finished job. She measured twice at the birches, adjusted nothing, and pronounced the lawn ready for weather, which those who knew her took seriously; Mei did not compliment terrain idly.
Talia drilled lanes and posted shadows like lantern-stands and drew up, on a single slate, a reception schedule accurate to the quarter hour, then quietly moved every item an hour later, having consulted the child about the pace at which tired things prefer to arrive. Perrin drilled Cillian in listening drills by the hour, out loud, in front of witnesses — sit on your hands so you cannot help them; now tell me how many are standing in the kitchen by the sound of the spoons alone — correcting him with a severity he had learned entirely from Sela; Cillian took notes; both parties were happier than either would have confessed. By Thursday Cillian could count a room through a closed door to within one, and Perrin told him it was the beginning of everything, which Cillian wrote down as if it were doctrine, which it was.
Seraphina found Maya in the still room on Thursday, sitting where the light fell, with the open box beside her like a patient.
You have the look of a girl doing arithmetic about her mother, Seraphina said, and sat down without being invited, which in that room was a permission she granted herself. Ask.
The box. The shelf. How long —
Longer than the academy has kept records of itself. It was here when I came as a girl. My teacher told me what her teacher told her: it must never leave this room, and the day it opens, the academy will need its whole heart, so try not to be elsewhere. Seraphina studied the empty interior, and the unsigned line, and the small inked wren looking east, and something crossed her face that was older than her face. Your mother stood in this room exactly once that I know of, the autumn before she left us. She looked at that box the way you are looking at it, and she said, of all things, She has good posture. I thought it was a joke. He was eleven years dead before I understood she had already met whatever writes in your mother's hand, and had been introducing you two for years.
Maya turned the wren toward the window light. You think she meant the box?
I think, said Seraphina, that your mother never once used a small word where a true one would do, and that she chose an animal which sings before dawn on principle. But I am eighty-one, and my certainties retired before I did. Ask the page, next time it writes. It strikes me that the two of you have unfinished correspondence, and that postscript was hers first.
Sela weighed Maya on Friday, pronounced the edges restored, threatened the middle of her, and confiscated one evening of birch-line visiting per week in perpetuity as insurance, which Maya signed without argument because arguing with Sela about rest was a sport with no winners.
Vesper left on Saturday.
She went quietly, at dawn, coat the color of the far sea, east-first-then-west bow delivered to the household assembled without anyone having summoned them. Courtesy runs both ways or it is only manners, she said, and someone must walk out to meet the tide, and I am the only person standing on this shore who knows the deep water's manners well enough to greet what is coming without lying to it. She left gifts because far-country grammar required it: to Juniper's shadow, a bow returned with exact interest; to Perrin, a small gray stone from the far shore, which he accepted as though knighted and carried thereafter in the pocket where other boys kept marbles; to Maya, five words, spoken so that everyone heard — She carried you lightly. Carry her the same way — and was over the seam and gone before anyone managed to weep in an organized manner.
The Consistory's traveling party was sighted crossing the eastern gates on Monday under a white tablecloth run up on a spear, which was the nearest thing the mountain owned to a flag of parley, and Mother Ursula — for so the ancient Consistorial mother was called, Ursula being a mountain name meaning, roughly, she who will sit down first and rise last — sent ahead one line of instruction: We travel to listen. Feed your ghosts; we will feed ourselves.
Marta took this as a personal challenge and began, that same afternoon, a third ledger.
And then, on Wednesday, at noon, with the sun high and unhelpful, the beacon on Fen's point lit.
No fog justified it. No night required it. The dark that kept the harbor light simply assembled its lantern-flame in the iron cage and tolled — once, twice, three times — and down every thread in the network ran the same dispatch, breathless, from the ferry-towns and Saltmarsh and the coast road: keepers reporting their cellar-darks standing up from old posts for the first time in living memory, turning west, listening; the ferry-shadow leaving its lantern-lit water unlit for an hour, which had never happened, and standing in midstream facing seaward like a sentry relieved early. Six words closed every dispatch, and emptied the academy's classrooms within the hour:
The tide has stood up. Walking.
