Chapter 19 The Caretaker

# Chapter 19: The Caretaker Thomas returned to Blackwood Manor and resumed his duties as caretaker. He pruned the roses, watered the soil, and monitored the organism's growth. He fed it willingly, accepting the cost of his service. The garden responded with beauty — roses blooming in impossible colors, vines weaving intricate patterns, the air filled with a fragrance that healed as much as it harmed. "This is my choice," Thomas said one evening, standing in the garden as the sun set. "I feed the garden because I understand its nature. And in return, it gives me something precious — purpose, beauty, connection to something greater than myself." Mrs. Halloway, now frail and aged, watched from the porch. "You've accepted it," she said. "Not just the garden, but your role in its cycle. That makes you the true caretaker." Thomas smiled. "I'm not a servant. I'm a steward. There's a difference."
