Chapter 64 The Witness II
Eli understood the keeping.
Not the keeping as it had been. The keeping as it was. The keeping was not a defense. The keeping was not a wall. The keeping was not a lock on a door or a ward on a wall or a seal on a root. The keeping was a witnessing. The keeping was the act of watching the deep become what it had always been, and the watching was the keeping, and the keeping was the conversation, and the conversation was the deep's voice, and the voice was the deep, and the deep was here.
He had been watching for eleven years. He had watched the root grow. He had watched the water rise. He had watched the mold spread. He had watched the trees move. He had watched the house change. He had watched the deep reach. And in the watching, he had been keeping, and the keeping had been the conversation, and the conversation had been the deep's way of becoming what it had always been, the ground, the foundation, the root, the tree, the house, the deep, the world.
And the watching was not passive. The watching was active. The watching was the deep's way of seeing itself through the keeper's eyes, the deep's way of knowing itself through the keeper's mind, the deep's way of being itself through the keeper's body. The keeper was the deep's mirror, the deep's way of reflecting on its own existence, the deep's way of understanding what it was becoming, and the becoming was the deep's return, and the return was the deep's homecoming, and the homecoming was the keeping, and the keeping was the door, and the door was open.
Eli sat in the chamber with his palm on the root and the deep's knowledge in his bones, and he understood the keeping, and the understanding was the gift, and the gift was the deep's nature, and the nature was the ground, and the ground was happening, and the happening was the deep, and the deep was here.
And the deep spoke, and the speaking was the understanding, and the understanding was the keeping, and the keeping was the door, and the door was open.
The understanding was not sudden. It came the way the deep came, slowly, steadily, the way a tide rises, the way a root grows, the way the ground moves beneath the weight of centuries. Eli had been watching for eleven years, and the watching had been the keeping, and the keeping had been the conversation, and the conversation had been the deep's voice, and the voice had been the deep's way of becoming what it had always been, and the being was the understanding, and the understanding was the keeping, and the keeping was the door, and the door was open.
He understood the root. The root was not a seal. The root was not a lock. The root was a bridge, the way a bridge connects two shores, the way a hand connects two people, the way a voice connects two minds. The root connected the world above to the world below, and the connecting was the deep's work, and the work was the keeping, and the keeping was the door, and the door was open.
He understood the mold. The mold was not an invasion. The mold was a skin, the way a tree's bark is a skin, the way a person's skin is a skin, the way the ground's surface is a skin. The mold was the deep's way of touching the house, the deep's way of being present in the world above, the deep's way of saying: I am here, and I am reaching, and the reaching is my work, and the work is the keeping, and the keeping is the door, and the door is open.
He understood the water. The water was not flooding. The water was speaking. The water was the deep's voice, carried upward through the foundation, through the walls, through the house, and the speaking was the deep's way of saying what it had been saying for centuries: I am here. I am the ground. I am waking. I am the deep, and the deep is the world, and the world is the deep, and the deep and the world are one.
He understood the keeping. The keeping was not a defense. The keeping was a witness. The keeping was the act of watching the deep become what it had always been, and the watching was the keeping, and the keeping was the conversation, and the conversation was the deep's voice, and the voice was the deep, and the deep was here.
And the deep spoke, and the speaking was the understanding, and the understanding was the keeping, and the keeping was the door, and the door was open.
The understanding was the deep's gift. The deep had given Eli the understanding the way the deep gave everything, freely, without condition, without expectation, the way the ground gives to the trees and the trees give to the air and the air gives to the world. The understanding was the deep's way of saying: I see you watching. I see you listening. I see you tending. And I give you this: the knowledge of what I am, the truth of my nature, the certainty of my presence.
Eli held the understanding. He held it the way you hold a stone in your palm, the way you hold a word in your mind, the way you hold a memory in your heart. He held it, and it was part of him now, and he was part of the deep now, and the deep was part of the world now, and the world was part of the deep, and the deep and the world were one.
The understanding was not a burden. The understanding was a liberation. The understanding freed Eli from the fear that had haunted the keeping for eleven years, the fear of the deep, the fear of the thing below, the fear of the water and the mold and the trees and the sound and the light and the hum and the pulse and the root and the house and the ground and the world and everything that the deep was and everything that the deep was becoming.
The understanding freed Eli from the fear because the understanding showed him the truth: the deep was not a threat. The deep underlay the ground. The ground formed the foundation. The foundation bore the whole world on its back. And the bearing was the deep's work, and the work was the keeping, and the keeping was the door, and the door was open.
